Vandal Electrocuted While Tampering With Power Tower

A suspected vandal was electrocuted in Ezillo, Ebonyi State, while attempting to tamper with Tower 34 along the Nkalagu–Abakaliki 132kV transmission line.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident in a statement, disclosing that security operatives informed the company of the development on July 19, 2025.

“Vandal electrocuted at Ezillo, Ebonyi State, while attempting to tamper with Tower 34 along the Nkalagu-Abakaliki 132kV transmission line,” TCN said on Tursday.

“Security operatives informed TCN on July 19, 2025, that the accomplices fled after the incident.”

While further details on the identity of the deceased were yet to be provided as of the time of filing this report, the TCN assured that it was working with security agencies to prevent further acts of sabotage.

The activities of electricity vandals have been said to significantly impact power supply in the country.

In January, the TCN noted that the transmission line that supplies electricity to the Central Area of Abuja and its environs was attacked.

A statement by the General Manager of Public Affairs at the TCN, Ndidi Mbah, said its 132kV transmission line and underground cables supplying electricity to Abuja’s Central Area and surrounding districts were vandalised, resulting in a major power outage.

The incident, which occurred near the Millennium Park area, disrupted over 60% of the power supply to the city. Vandals stole 40 metres of high-capacity conductors from two 132kV transmission lines, affecting electricity distribution from TCN’s Central Area Transmission Substation, which serves the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and its customers.

Previously, in November 2024, the TCN reported that vandals destroyed the 330kV Lokoja–Gwagwalada transmission line, disrupting bulk power transmission.

Ndidi Mbah also made the revelation.

The TCN team discovered that towers T306, T307, and T308 had been vandalised, with thieves stealing two spans of aluminium conductor from the transmission line.
