VIDEO: Kwankwaso Finally Joins ADC
Former Kano State Governor and ex-presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a major shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
Kwankwaso formally registered with the ADC on Monday at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano, where he received his membership card in the presence of top political figures.
Those at the event included ADC National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark; former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi; Senator Dino Melaye; and former APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, among others.
His defection followed his resignation from the NNPP, which he announced in a statement on Sunday, citing what he described as the need for “strategic realignment” in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso declared.
The former Defence Minister described his decision as difficult but necessary.
“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said.
Although Kwankwaso did not directly mention the internal crisis rocking the NNPP, his exit comes amid lingering political tensions in Kano State, including a reported rift between him and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
He expressed gratitude to the NNPP leadership, particularly the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the party’s National Working Committee and Board of Trustees.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time,” he said.
Kwankwaso also thanked members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their loyalty, assuring them that the struggle for a better Nigeria would continue despite his defection.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
His move comes days after a series of high-level political consultations involving key opposition figures, including former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola; Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; and Bayelsa West Senator, Seriake Dickson.
