WASA 2025: Defence Minister, COAS Emphasise Unity, Morale and Operational Readiness

The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), OFR, has described national unity as a decisive force multiplier in addressing Nigeria’s contemporary security challenges, commending the Nigerian Army for demonstrating cohesion, professionalism and patriotism.
The Minister made this known on Saturday, 14 February 2026, during the Army Headquarters Departments and Commands West African Social Activities (WASA) 2025, held at the Army Headquarters Garrison Parade Ground, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.
Represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Major General Henry Wesley (Rtd), the Minister portrayed the Nigerian Army as a microcosm of the Nigerian state — an institution where ethnic, cultural and religious diversity converge under one national identity. He stressed that at a time of complex and evolving security threats, unity remains Nigeria’s most potent strategic asset in safeguarding peace and stability.
According to him, the Army’s sustained commitment to discipline, professionalism and collective purpose strengthens national integration and proves that diversity, when effectively harnessed, is a source of strength rather than division. He praised the Service for its unwavering efforts in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, supporting civil authorities, upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens across the country.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who served as Chief Host, noted that WASA goes beyond a cultural celebration. He described it as a deliberate morale-building and unifying initiative embedded within the Robust Administration pillar of his Command Philosophy.
He explained that promoting esprit de corps, inclusiveness and shared identity among personnel directly enhances operational effectiveness.

The COAS added that ongoing welfare policies, institutional reforms and strengthened support systems are aimed at deepening the Soldier First Culture, ensuring that troops remain motivated, combat-ready and resilient, while their families receive necessary support.

Lieutenant General Shaibu reaffirmed that a united and well-motivated force is better positioned to confront terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other emerging security threats. He also reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to working collaboratively with sister services and other security agencies to consolidate gains and restore lasting peace across the nation.

The Army Chief expressed appreciation to President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR; the Honourable Minister of Defence; and the Chief of Defence Staff for their strategic guidance and continued support.

In his welcome address, the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, described WASA as a vital platform for strengthening bonds among officers, soldiers and their families.

He noted that celebrating Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage through traditional dances and performances fosters mutual respect, shared identity and national cohesion — values critical to overcoming security challenges.

He further revealed that Army Headquarters Departments and Commands achieved significant operational, administrative and logistics milestones in 2025, alongside sustained training activities aligned with the COAS’ directives and the Army’s operational priorities. As the Service progresses into 2026, he assured the COAS of personnel’s renewed dedication, discipline and responsiveness in service to the nation.

The colourful event featured traditional cultural displays, the beating of the retreat and the ceremonial lighting of the bonfire, symbolising unity, continuity and collective resolve in defence of Nigeria.
