3 statements Jonathan made back then that can hardly be repeated by present day political leaders. It is a pity today that our dear nation Nigeria has so deteriorated that we can hardly find selfless leaders who will sacrifice their ambition for the unity and oneness of this great nation.
3 Statements Jonathan Made Back Then That Can Hardly Be Repeated By Present Day Political Leaders
We are in an era where many politicians want to clinch power by all means. They don’t mind where innocent lives are lost as long as they get what want they.
In little wonder during elections, we hear of killings, maiming, and destruction of lives and properties, all of which are sponsored by some heartless politicians who want to clinch into power by all means.
The former president of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Azikiwe Ebele Jonathan is one epitome of a selfless leader that set an example as a selfless and sacrificial leader.
In the heat of a tense and battle-ready atmosphere, he sacrificed his right and veto power for the oneness and unity of this great country.
That was the first time Nigeria as a country would ever produce a selfless leader. Recall how Nigeria has been since after independence, from one military coup to another.
back then in power as the President of this nation, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan made some striking statements as Nigeria was preparing for her general elections in 2015.
Out of the several statements made by him, Nigerians will not forget these three in a hurry. They include;
1. “The choice before Nigerians in the coming election is simple: A choice between going forth or going behind; between new ways and old ways; between freedom and repression; between records of visible achievements and beneficial reforms – desperate power-seekers with empty promises.”
OPINION: Today, the kind of leaders we have are those who will bribe people to vote for them. Little wonder we have cases of vote-buying during elections. We don’t allow the rule of democracy to prevail in our elections.
2. “I am the most abused and insulted president in the world, but when I leave office, you will recall me for the full freedom you enjoyed under my government.”
OPINION: Who can dare to abuse this government and not be a witch-hunt? Some political leaders, the moment you speak against them or their style of leadership, they will eventually come for your life
3. ” My political intention or ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian citizen.”
OPINION: Can any politician be able to say that today? Seeing the wanton blood that is been shed every day all in the name of some so-called political ambition.
Some to the extent of importing thugs just to safeguard their political territory, not knowing that power is transient.
