PDP Blasts Tinubu For Labelling Protesters As Terrorists, Rejects Arrest Of Ajaero
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the arrest of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Monday.
Reacting to the arrest at a press conference in Abuja, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, blamed President Bola Tinubu for the wave of arrests.
Ologunagba noted that many Nigerians had taken to the streets between August 1 and 10 to protest against economic hardship in various cities.
“There is a need for caution. There was a protest in this country, the government did not do anything. You arrest some people and say they were terrorists and you charge them to court. You say some people were the sponsors of the protest,” Ologunagba stated.
“We know those who sponsored the protest. The sponsor is hungry. The President and his people should arrest hunger and there will be no problem. But you let your draconian policies bring people to their knees. This is the season schools are resuming, we know what people are going through,” he added.
Naija News House had earlier reported that the Department of the State Services (DSS) has arrested the Nigeria Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero.
The labour leader was arrested on Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Ajaero was about to board a flight to the United Kingdom for an official assignment when he was arrested the secret police.
He was later handed over to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Ajaero was reportedly on his way to attend the conference of Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the UK.
Ajaero had asked that the police invitation asking him and the NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, to come for questioning should be rescheduled.
He asked that the invitation should be moved from September 5, 2024 to September 25, 2024.
