Bill To Establish Fed College Of Education In Igbekebo Ondo Pass Second Reading
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC/Ondo South) has sponsored a bill to establish a Federal College of Education in Igbekebo, Ondo State. The bill, which was first read on October 12, 2023, has now passed the second reading at the Senate.
Senator Ibrahim emphasized the importance of qualified teachers in a robust educational system, he said,
“The need to have a strong system in our educational sector that shall continuously produce well-qualified and trained teachers as it is obtainable in other developed countries cannot be overemphasized.”
He also highlighted the role of colleges of education in national development, stating, “The realization that Colleges of Education are tools for national development, have led to an unbridled quest for, and vigorous expansion of Colleges of Education in Nigeria.”
The Lawmaker also said, the proposed college aims to provide academic and professional programs, promote learning without discrimination, and develop adaptive skills in various disciplines. Senator Ibrahim envisioned the institution producing socially mature educators who can drive effective educational systems and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
He concluded his lead debate by saying, “It is my prayer and ardent call on you to consider the plight of the people who are desirous to becoming professional teachers.”
The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund for further legislative action
