The new Secretary of the FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Abubakar Ibrahim, has once again banned the use of tyres in roasting animals because of unhygienic state of abattoirs in the FCT.
This newspaper had repeatedly reported how butchers were using tyres to roast animals.
Fielding questions from Journalists yesterday, the secretary also described the state of the abbatoirs as embarrassing and said they required urgent attention.
He said the secretariat had also directed that potable water be provided in all the abattoirs.
“I have also directed the timely evacuation of refuse from the abattoirs,’’ he said.
The new secretary also announced that 12 tractors would be purchased for farmers in the next farming year, adding that two would be given to each of the six area councils.
He assured that the problem of post-harvest loss would also be addressed by providing storage facilities and airbags to the farmers.
