General Dogonyaro was the famed military officer who announced the removal of President Muhammad Buhari during the 1985 coup which saw his ouster as military head of state
It all happened on a bright Sallah Day, the Id-el-Kabir day on August 26/27, 1985.
The plan was already in top gear as some military officers were already stationed at strategic points around the country.
A sergeant named Odoba, was stationed at the FRCN Radio station in Ikoyi as the duty officer and was duly told by his Garrison Commander not to resist when he sees armored vehicles approaching for yet another ‘exercise’.
It wasn’t long after that when the then Colonel Joshua Nimyel Dogonyaro, Director of Manning (“A” Branch) and also, Director of the Department of Armour at the Army Headquarters arrived at the radio station
At 0600 hours on Tuesday, August 27, 1985, as unsuspecting Nigerians were still enjoying the Muslim holiday, they all woke up to the fearful sound of martial music added with a very unfamiliar voice which was about to make the announcement that could change the country forever.
It was no other than Dogonyaro himself on the airwaves.

After that, He announced the removal of General Muhammed Buhari and about an hour later, the then Brigadier Sani Abacha, who was at the time, the General officer commanding the 2nd Mechanized Division of the Nigerian Army, came on air to announce the appointment of Major General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, as the new Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces
Dogonyaro, a Former Field Commander of ECOMOG, died in Jos on this morning according to family sources.
He was aged 80.
