Nnamdi Kanu: DSS Director, Bichi In Jail For Contempt
The legal team of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to issue an order committing to prison the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi, over contempt of court.
The legal team led by Kanu’s special counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, made the demand in an application notice filed before the court over Bichi’s disobedience to the order the court made on May 20 on the custody and welfare of Kanu in detention.
The court on May 20 gave an order “varying the condition of visitation to him in custody to 3 days a week”.
The court also ruled, “He is to be given a safe and ‘clean’ room to be made available to the Defendant at the present facility to prepare for his defense with his team of counsel not exceeding 5 in number.
“That they should be allowed such facility that is required for the preparation of his defence and be allowed to take notes.”
Kanu’s legal team said in the notice that Bichi disobeyed the court order.
His lawyers said during the visits to Kanu at the DSS detention facility in Abuja after the issuance and service of the said order and Form 48 thereof, the DSS director general did not allow them to go in with writing materials to take notes of their discussions with Kanu as regards their preparation for the IPOB leader’s defence.
The legal team also accused Bichi of not complying with the three days per week visitation to Kanu as ordered by the court, and failing to provide a safe and “clean” room for Kanu at the present facility to prepare for his defence with his lawyers.
The legal team said that Bichi is required to go to court to show cause why an order for his committal to prison should not be made.
