Students, Others Stranded As Bridge Linking Nigerian University Collapses After Heavy Rainfall
Motorists, students and other users of a bridge linking Shao and Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete Road in Moro Local Government of Kwara State as the bridge collapsed after a heavy rainfall.
From videos and photographs from the incident showed that the bridge cut into two, leaving no access for users.
The Registrar of the Kwara State University, Dr. Kikelomo W. Sallee, also confirmed the incident in a terse statement on the university’s Twitter account on Wednesday saying that the collapse was caused by the heavy rainfall.
Sallee however assured the University Community that the University Management was taking necessary actions to restore movement along the road, adding that “During this challenging period, we kindly request the utmost cooperation and patience from the entire University Community. We are diligently working to restore normalcy as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.”
In an updated statement, the Registrar said that “Following the collapse of the culvert at the Shao-Malete intersection, the Management of Kwara State University, Malete, swung into action to ensure there is movement to and fro the University.
“The culvert collapsed after the heavy rains of Tuesday, July 18, 2023. The Kwara State Ministry of Works and Transport inspected this failed portion of the road immediately after the management of the University reported the development.
“Efforts are on to provide a temporary access road to commuters on the busy route, pending the construction of a new bridge.”
