EXCLUSIVE: Nigerian Inmate Suffers Stroke In Prison, Allegedly Denied Medical Care
A Nigerian inmate at the Kaliti Prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is currently down with a stroke, SaharaReporters has gathered.
Kaliti is a maximum-security prison in Addis Ababa.
The inmate identified as Basil Lawrence Ilobi is from Delta State.
Lawrence is one of about 300 inmates of Nigerian descent at the facility.
It was gathered that several Nigerian inmates have fallen ill due to malnourishment as they are allegedly fed white rice without sauce once a day, all year round.
Some of them also complained of corporal, overcrowding and lack of access to medical care.
“One of our brothers is seriously sick right now and he has been abandoned by the Ethiopian government. He has been denied access to medical care. He has a stroke and his name is Lawrence,” one of the inmates said.
“Please we don’t want any of our brothers to die again because the embassy cannot do anything to help.”
Another inmate said, “We Nigerians are suffering in Kaliti Prison in Ethiopia and our government seems to have abandoned us. We have lost two Nigerians in that prison in the last six months and our government kept quiet.
“Another Nigerian, Lawrence from Delta state is currently down with stroke and the doctors in Kaliti Prison have not treated him. They asked him to pay money before they will treat him and all the Nigerians in that prison are the ones paying for their feeding. Our government should please transfer us to Nigerian prisons.”
It was reported that over 300 Nigerians were languishing in the Ethiopian prison.
Some of them had called on the Nigerian government to facilitate their transfer to prisons in Nigeria.
The detainees said they suffer grave human rights abuses in prison.
They appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene so they could be transferred to serve the remainder of their jail terms in Nigeria.
