BREAKING: Gunmen Ambush Military Convoy Kill Soldiers
In a tragic turn of events, gunmen ambushed a truck transporting five Army officers in Ogwu-Ikpele community, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the deaths of at least two soldiers.
The incident occurred around 8:10 am on Tuesday and has left one officer injured, prompting the Army to secure the area amidst heavy gunfire.
Eyewitness accounts describe a calculated ambush at the Amaja axis of Ogwu-Ikpele, where the unknown assailants attacked the soldiers unexpectedly and then retreated into nearby bushes.
The soldiers were escorting oil production workers from Ogwu-Ikpele to the Umunzarabia location when the attack occurred.
A local witness reported, “Five Army officers conveying oil production workers from Ogwu-Ikpele to Umunzarabia location were ambushed at Amaja area of Ogwu-Ikpele by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.
Two soldiers were killed in the process, while one was injured. The Army has now taken control of the area with heavy shooting ongoing. The community is engulfed in fear, anticipating a possible reprisal attack from the Army.”
In response to the attack, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the police command was not aware of the incident and could not provide confirmation. Similarly, the Army’s spokesperson in the state, Lt. Col. Jonathan, neither confirmed nor denied the attack but assured that further information would be forthcoming.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region, raising concerns among residents about their safety and the potential for escalating violence.
