Real Reason Why I Resigned As NIA DG – Ahmed Abubakar Finally Breaks Silence
Ahmed Abubakar has given reasons for his decision to resign as the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Abubakar submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu on Saturday evening at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
Speaking after the brief meeting with the President, Abubakar revealed that personal and family matters were key factors in his decision to step down from his role.
He expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in the new administration’s first 15 months, noting that he had held the position since 2018.
When asked about his reasons for resigning, Abubakar responded, “There are quite a number of reasons one will do that. Some personal family issues, but nothing very serious, actually, and the friendship will continue.”
He further assured that he would remain committed to matters concerning the country’s security, saying, “I discussed with Mr. President, he understood very well, and I promised to remain steadfast with issues and the security situations of the country.”
Abubakar’s resignation came after a routine briefing with the President at the Villa.
“It’s a routine thing, from time to time, to brief Mr. President on situations, on issues, and today is no exception. After the briefing, I tendered my resignation, and Mr. President graciously approved and accepted it,” he stated.
Reflecting on his tenure, Abubakar expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve Nigeria under President Tinubu’s leadership, which he described as “transformational.” He highlighted the extended 15-month period he served in the current administration, acknowledging it as a rare privilege.
Ahmed Abubakar was first appointed as the Director General of the NIA in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who later extended his tenure in December 2021.
