During market survey by News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday discovered that a big basket of UTC specie of the tomato now N7,500 instead of N11, 500 as before, while The small basket of the commodity goes for N5,000 ( Five thousand Naria) as against N8,000 ( Eight Thousand Naria).
A dealer of tomato at the Garki Market, Enugu, Garba Adamu, stated the development to the harvest season.
According to Adamu, the UTC specie that comes from Jos, Plateau state had flooded the markets, hence the drastic drop in its price.
However, Adamu said, “some weeks ago, the UTC specie was sold N10,000 ( Ten thousand Naria) and N11,500 ( Eleven thousand five hundred Naria) depend on sellers, while the other from Benue State were scarce.
According to Another tomato seller at Kenyatta Market, Grace Ogbu said the price would further crash “because this is its season”.
At New Akwata-Garki Market, Amara Chima said a five-litre-size bucket of the commodity now goes for N600 ( six hundred Naria) instead of N1,000 ( One thousand Naria) as before.
Also Mrs Chima said that, half of the quantity sells for N300 ( Three hundred Naria) as against N700 ( Seven hundred Naria).
It was a traditional for the price of tomatoes to drop after the Yuletide every year at the Ogbete Market, one of the customer Anthonia Ojinaka, disclosed that to us.
Mrs Ojinaka lamented about the scarcity and high cost of the tomato “during its off-season to the lack of storage facilities in the country.”
However, Mrs. Ojinaka, called on the various tiers of government, top politicans to provide storage facilities for farmers and foodstuff dealers.
She stated that the facility would help famers in preserving perishable goods, making them available and affordable all year round.
