Meanwhile, the case report has it that the mother’s prenatal ultrasound had revealed an unusual mass within the infant, but it was unclear to the doctors exactly what the mass was and during surgery, which was done when the girl was about 3 weeks old, the surgeons discovered two fetuses between her liver and her kidney.
Fetus-in-fetu was first documented in a British medical journal in 1808. It has since been recorded in births in Indonesia, India, and Singapore.
It is thought that the condition affects approximately one in half a million live births across the globe.
Doctors had been concerned that if they did not remove the fetus from the baby their development couldn’t proceed normally and would have continued to grow and damaged the infant’s internal organs.
