Wiping Anus To Front Introduces Bacteria From Anus To Vag*na —Researcher
Wiping anus to front introduces bacteria from anus to vag*na. It has been reported that a retired Chief Research Fellow at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Dan Onwujekwe, says many women are in the habit of wiping the wrong way after using the toilet, thereby exposing themselves to the risk of bacteria and urinary tract infections.
According to him, women must learn to wipe the proper way after using the toilet.
Onwujekwe who disclosed this during an interview with media, said though some urinary tract infections such as gonorrhea and syphilis are s*xually transmitted, many of them are also acquired among women through improper hygiene.
The researcher said, “Many women, after using the toilet, the way they clean up can predispose them to urinary tract infection. They must learn to wipe the proper way.
“Many of them, after emptying their bowels, wipe from the back towards the front and in the process, they may introduce bacteria from the anus into the vagina.
From there, the bacteria gets into the lower urinary tract and will ascend from there to the kidney and they will get urinary tract infection.
“The proper way to wipe is from the front towards the back, so that bacteria don’t get introduced into the urinary tract through the vagina.”
Onwujekwe noted that urinary tract infection does not mean that it must be s*xually transmitted.
“Those of them that are transmitted through s*x, such as gonorrhea and syphilis, can be prevented by appropriate and regular use of condoms.
“Appropriate and regular use of condoms can prevent transmission of s*xually transmitted infections of the urinary tract,” he counselled.
He also warned that urinating after s*x cannot prevent urinary tract infection, especially in females, saying that women should avoid risky behaviours.
“What you need to know is that urine comes from the bladder and the bladder sits on top of the vag*na. That is how the female anatomy is.

So, whatever is deposited that can cause infection is usually gonorrhea and Chlamydia.
“When they are deposited inside the vag*na where they affect the vagina vault, then they can affect the cervix or the uterus.
“The urinary tract is on top of the anterior wall of the vag*na. If the infection stays there, urinating alone cannot prevent it.
Those thinking that they can prevent urinary tract infection by urinating after s*x are exposing themselves to a risk.
“The information on social media that urinating after s*x can prevent urinary tract infection, especially in females, is wrong.”
He urged women with urinary tract infection to avoid self medication and go for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
The researcher cautioned that if not properly treated, urinary tract infection could lead to kidney damage and infertility.
Wiping Wrongly
In a 2016 article titled, ‘Common questions about recurrent urinary tract infections in women,’ published in the American Family Physician Journal, the authors say that urinating after s*x does not have any measurable protective effects.
They, however, suggest that it is a safe and reasonable thing to do.
