EFCC Secures Conviction of Ex-Banker Over Unauthorised ₦1m Withdrawal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of a former banker, Chukwuebuka Nweke, over the unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from a customer’s bank account.
Nweke was convicted on Monday, October 19, 2026, by Justice Ismail Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja.

In a press release, the anti-graft agency explained that the case arose from an incident on June 21, 2025, when Nweke allegedly accessed a desktop computer assigned to Emmanuella Anyanwu without lawful authority.
The EFCC said the unauthorised access facilitated the withdrawal of ₦1 million from the account of Leelee Dumbari, which was maintained with one of the new-generation banks.
The commission stated that the offence was punishable under Section 386(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Following its investigation, the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 brought a one-count charge against Nweke over the unlawful withdrawal.
Although the former banker pleaded not guilty, the matter proceeded to trial, during which the prosecution presented five witnesses through its counsel, M.K. Bashir. The defence presented one witness.
After considering the evidence before the court, Justice Ijelu found Nweke guilty of the offence.
The judge subsequently ordered him to pay a fine of ₦1 million within 30 days, warning that failure to comply would lead to his remand in a correctional centre for six months.
