Abdulrasheed Bawa, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has urged Nigerians to avoid fraud and similar practices.
The senior detective advised young people, in particular, to stay away from online fraud and join the EFCC to fight financial crimes.
Bawa delivered the advice at a speech he made at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries in the Dakwo Mega Region of Abuja on “Inherent Risks on Cyber/Internet Fraud.”
According to Joseph Yetwi, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, online fraud is common among young people between the ages of 14 and 40.
He emphasized that dishonest acts take happen in all settings, including courts, churches, mosques, offices, governments, and schools.
The anti-corruption director also provided some references to corrupt individuals who never ended well.
Bawa urged parents to always conduct due diligence on their children by following Proverbs 22: 6: ‘Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it’.
“Exodus 20:15 says ‘You shall not steal.’ It is important to note that all forms of financial crimes are directly and indirectly theft or stealing.”
The chairman added that there are many more passages of the Bible that emphasized God’s disapproval of financial crimes and corruption.
“There is no place for a fraudster or corrupt person in the Kingdom of God. If anyone engages in these vices, he or she will suffer punishment from God and man”, he said.
Bawa asked Nigerians to work together to solve the issue, calling on the judiciary, law enforcement, and other religious and community organizations.
