Wike Lands In Big Trouble For Sacking Heads Of FCT Agencies

Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the head of Transparency International Nigeria and executive director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), has made a public call to Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister, to elucidate the reasons behind his abrupt decision to dismiss the heads of 21 government agencies. The unexpected move by Wike has created a stir and raised questions about the motives behind such a sweeping decision.

Rafsanjani has stressed on the importance of maintaining transparency in the government’s actions to uphold public trust. He believes that Wike’s rationale behind the dismissals should be communicated clearly to the public. If the dismissals were based on the expiration of the officials’ tenures, it could be seen as a constitutional and morally justifiable action. However, Rafsanjani has also expressed concern about the potential for self-interest or political alignment influencing the decision. In such a case, the action would be deemed inappropriate and unfair.

Assumptions and Accountability
Further, Rafsanjani cautioned against making general assumptions about the dismissed officials. He remarked that it is unreasonable to assume that all dismissed officials were ineffective or corrupt. The CISLAC head underscored the necessity for a comprehensive explanation from Wike. Providing a detailed account of the reasons behind the mass dismissal could address concerns and ensure accountability in the decision-making process.

The Global Justice Initiative (GJI), a renowned non-governmental organization committed to promoting social justice and human rights, has also echoed Rafsanjani’s sentiments. The GJI, led by Executive Director Ezeukwu, urged Wike to shed light on his decision. They believe that a detailed explanation is crucial to uphold accountability and transparency in public service. Ezeukwu emphasized the importance of transparency in maintaining public trust and effective governance.

Ezeukwu explained that accountability is a cornerstone of a functioning democracy. The public has a right to know the reasoning behind decisions made by public officials, especially when these decisions significantly impact their lives and well-being. Thus, the GJI and CISLAC’s call for clarification and transparency from Wike is not just about understanding a single decision but about reinforcing the principles of accountability and transparency that underpin a democratic society.
