Nigeria has recorded a significant number of newly tested HIV-positive cases across the country in the first quarter of 2026, with Lagos State topping the chart, followed closely by Benue and Akwa Ibom.
Data covering January to March 2026 shows that Lagos recorded the highest number of new HIV cases with 2,298 infections, while Benue followed with 1,949 cases. Akwa Ibom ranked third with 1,159 cases, and Rivers State reported 1,137, placing it fourth.
Anambra State came fifth with 1,013 cases, while Kaduna (842), Delta (803), Oyo (763), and Ogun (751) also recorded high figures within the period under review. Plateau State rounded out the top ten with 662 cases.
Other states with notable numbers include Imo (640), Nasarawa (615), Taraba (605), and the Federal Capital Territory (579). Abia (527), Edo (512), Enugu (479), and Kano (476) also featured prominently on the list.
Meanwhile, states with comparatively lower figures include Ekiti (129), Sokoto (110), and Yobe, which recorded the least number of new cases at 100.
In total, the figures highlight the continued public health challenge posed by HIV across Nigeria, with variations in prevalence across regions. Health experts say the data underscores the urgent need for sustained awareness campaigns, expanded testing, and improved access to treatment and preventive services nationwide.
