Job Scam: EFCC Grills Woman Over Alleged N8.29m Fraud Against 21 Job Seekers

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating a businesswoman, Stella Ezinne Egotanwa, for allegedly defrauding 21 job seekers of N8,291,200 by promising to secure employment for them at Neo Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu.

The suspect, aged 45, was reportedly arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State on July 30, 2026, following petitions from individuals who alleged that she collected money from them without securing the promised jobs.
In a statement, the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate said 16 individuals initially accused Egotanwa of collecting N6,193,000 from them under the guise of facilitating their employment at the hospital.
She was transferred to the EFCC on August 26, 2026, for further investigation into the allegations.
During the investigation, five more individuals reportedly submitted petitions against the businesswoman, claiming that they had collectively lost N2,098,200 to the alleged employment scam.
One of the complainants said she paid the suspect N1.05 million on December 28, 2025, after being convinced that the employment opportunity was legitimate.
The petitioner, however, alleged that the job did not materialise despite the payment. She also disclosed that she subsequently struggled to reach Egotanwa, who allegedly failed to respond to her calls and messages at different times.
The EFCC said its investigations indicated that the alleged fraud occurred between December 28, 2025, and June 30, 2026, with the suspect reportedly using several accounts belonging to different Point of Sale (POS) agents to receive payments from the victims.
The Commission also revealed that Egotanwa is currently awaiting trial in another case involving an alleged employment scam.
According to the EFCC, the suspect has admitted to the alleged crime.
The Commission added that she would be arraigned in court after the conclusion of investigations.
