NUJ Declare Immediate Boycott Of Kano Govt’s Activities
The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Kano State Council, part of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), has declared an immediate boycott of all activities related to the Kano State Government.
This decision, as outlined in a statement from the Chairman of the NUJ Kano Chapter, Aminu Garko, stems from ongoing issues of mistreatment directed at its members by the state government.
The chapel highlighted its deep concerns regarding the continuous harassment and intimidation of journalists, calling on all members to refrain from covering any events or activities associated with Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration.
“Despite our attempts to resolve these issues through dialogue with the government, there has been no improvement,” Garko stated. “Journalists continue to endure harassment, intimidation, and even physical attacks while on duty.”
The statement on Monday also criticized the government’s preference for employing non-professionals over trained journalists, effectively sidelining those most qualified to perform the job.
This, the journalists perceived as a deliberate policy that undermines the professionalism and safety of the press.
As a result, the chapel announced a halt to participation in press conferences, government events, and interviews with state officials until a clear commitment to press freedom and journalist safety is demonstrated.
“We urge all members to comply with this directive and join us in protesting the ill treatment of journalists in Kano State.
“A free and independent press is vital to democracy, and we will not tolerate the mistreatment and intimidation of our members,” the statement concluded.
