Mother Sells 6-day-old Babies Over ‘Inability To Care For Them’
Two women have been detained in Lagos for their alleged involvement in the sale of two newborn babies.
The arrest occurred at Berger bus-stop, a major entryway into Lagos State, after patrol officers from the Ojodu Division acted on a tip-off provided by a concerned citizen.
According to a statement from SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, the suspects were found with two baby girls, each around six days old, while traveling from Abia State on September 9, 2024.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were en route to meet a nurse in Lagos, as arranged by the babies’ mother.
The women admitted to receiving N150,000 to transport the infants to Lagos, explaining that the mother sold the babies due to her inability to care for them.
The case has been transferred to the Command’s Gender Unit for further investigation, and the babies are currently being looked after at a motherless babies’ home, where they are undergoing medical checks.
Authorities are continuing to investigate in order to apprehend other parties involved in the incident.
The two women were arraigned on September 19, 2024.
