Governor Okpebholo Stranded Over Suspended Edo Local Govt Chairmen, Deputies
The Edo State High Court has ordered the reinstatement of the 18 suspended local government chairmen and their deputies across the state.
Presiding over the case, Justice Efe Ikponmwonba ruled in favour of the claimants following a suit filed by the affected officials, challenging their suspension by the Edo State House of Assembly.
The court also issued a restraining order against Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Edo State Government, the Attorney General, the Commissioner for Justice, and the Accountant General from implementing the Assembly’s suspension resolution.
Justice Ikponmwonba directed that the status quo as of December 12, 2024, be maintained, pending the determination of the motion on notice.
Furthermore, a mandatory injunction was granted, compelling the reinstatement of the affected officials to their respective roles.
“The Court orders a mandatory injunction compelling the defendants by themselves, their privies, servants, agents, howsoever named or described, to restore the chairmen and vice chairmen to their respective local government councils,” the judge stated.
The matter was adjourned to February 17, 2025, for a hearing, with instructions for a hearing notice to be served on all defendants.
