FULL LIST: Mass Defections Hit House Of Reps Ahead Of 2027 Elections as APC, ADC Gain Lawmakers
Not less than 27 members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday dumped their political parties in what is one of the largest waves of defections in the Green Chamber ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read the notices of defection during plenary.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) recorded the highest number of new entrants, gaining 14 lawmakers, including eight from Kano State who defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) also gained significant ground with eight lawmakers joining its ranks. The defectors into ADC include five from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), two from the Labour Party (LP), and one from the APC.
Other parties also recorded gains, with the Action Peoples Party (APP) receiving two lawmakers, one each from the PDP and LP, while the Accord Party gained two members, both from the PDP. One lawmaker defected from the APC to LP.
The development further strengthens the APC’s dominance in the House, pushing its membership to about 280 out of the 360 lawmakers.
The plenary session where the defections were announced was attended by prominent political figures, including Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
Most of the lawmakers cited internal crises within their former parties as the reason for their defections.
