Kalu Congratulates Nigerian-Born Professor Dapo Akande on Election as ICJ Judge
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has congratulated Nigerian-born Professor Dapo Akande on his election as a judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), describing the achievement as a significant milestone for Nigeria and Africa.
Kalu, in a congratulatory statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, said Akande’s election reflects Nigeria’s intellectual excellence and strengthens Africa’s representation and voice at the world’s highest judicial institution.
He described the Oxford University professor as a distinguished legal scholar whose achievement brings pride to Nigeria and the African continent.
The Deputy Speaker recalled receiving Professor Akande at the National Assembly on June 3, 2026, alongside officials of the British High Commission, when he expressed support for his candidacy as the United Kingdom’s nominee for the ICJ.
According to Kalu, the nomination of a Nigerian-born scholar to the international court represents more than symbolic recognition, describing it as an acknowledgment of Africa’s rightful place in global justice and international legal affairs.
He noted that Africa’s representation on the court was a matter of justice rather than sentiment, stressing the importance of ensuring that the continent’s voice is heard in decisions affecting the international community.
Professor Akande, a Nigerian-trained lawyer and Professor of Public International Law at the University of Oxford, was elected on November 3, 2026, by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council to serve a nine-year term on the 15-member ICJ.
Kalu expressed confidence that Akande’s extensive experience, deep understanding of international law and commitment to justice would contribute significantly to the court’s work and the promotion of the rule of law globally.
He said: “Professor Akande’s victory is a testament to the excellence that Nigeria continues to offer the world. It also strengthens Africa’s presence and voice at the world’s highest judicial bench.
“I have no doubt that his vast experience, deep knowledge of international law and commitment to justice will make a significant contribution to the work of the Court and the advancement of the rule of law globally.
“Congratulations once again, Professor Dapo Akande. Nigeria is proud of you, and Africa celebrates this remarkable achievement with you,” Kalu said.
