Nigeria Postpones 5th Global Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance
Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has announced the postponement of the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), which was scheduled to take place in Abuja from June 28 to 30, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the government, the decision was reached after extensive consultations with key stakeholders and partners involved in preparations for the international conference. Authorities said a new date for the event would be communicated in due course.
The government expressed regret over any inconvenience the postponement may cause and thanked stakeholders for their understanding, support, and continued cooperation.
It also acknowledged the contributions of the Troika, the Global Leaders Group on AMR, the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR, member states, development partners, international organisations, civil society groups, academic institutions, youth networks, and other partners who have been supporting preparations for the conference.
Despite the postponement, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to hosting the global gathering and advancing international collaboration in tackling antimicrobial resistance through the One Health approach.
The statement noted that preparatory activities would continue under the supervision of the Local Organising Committee and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government. Engagement with partners and stakeholders will also continue to ensure the successful convening of the conference at a later date.
The government emphasized that antimicrobial resistance remains one of the most pressing global health challenges, requiring sustained commitment and coordinated action across countries and sectors.
Nigeria expressed optimism about welcoming delegates to Abuja once a new date is announced and reiterated its determination to contribute to global efforts aimed at combating antimicrobial resistance.
