ADC Urges Nigerians to Vote Out APC Over 570% Petrol Price Increase, Cites US Election

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to learn from the outcome of the recent United States midterm elections by voting against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in January 2027 over the rising cost of living.

The opposition party said the defeat suffered by the ruling Republican Party in the US elections demonstrated that economic hardship and the rising cost of living could significantly influence electoral outcomes.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, November 7, by its National Publicity Secretary,
Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said Nigerians had experienced a 570 per cent increase in petrol prices since President Bola Tinubu removed the fuel subsidy in May 2023.
The party noted that while American voters reacted to an approximately 37 per cent increase in fuel prices in some states, Nigerians had endured a significantly higher increase.
According to the statement, average petrol prices rose from N238.11 per litre in May 2023 to N1,596.25 in May 2026, representing an increase of about 570 per cent.
The ADC argued that the development had worsened the economic situation of ordinary Nigerians, making transportation increasingly unaffordable, driving up food prices and putting pressure on small businesses.
“Every Nigerian household is paying the price for the APC and Tinubu’s failed policies,” the party said.
It accused the Tinubu administration of failing to demonstrate how the removal of fuel subsidies would translate into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens, despite repeatedly asking Nigerians to endure economic sacrifices for a better future.
The opposition party further urged Nigerians to make affordability and the cost of living central issues in the forthcoming elections.
“As January 16 approaches, Nigerians deserve clear answers about how fuel, electricity, food and transportation would be made affordable. The APC and President Tinubu clearly do not have answers,” the statement added.
The ADC maintained that Nigerians should take a cue from American voters by rejecting the ruling party at the polls.
