FMOH Begins Preparations for 67th National Council on Health, Urges Members to Deliver Quality Recommendations

     National Council on Health

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has inaugurated the Sub-Committees for the 67th Regular National Council on Health (NCH), charging members to demonstrate diligence, integrity, professionalism and objectivity in carrying out their responsibilities.
The 67th Regular National Council on Health is scheduled to hold from November 16 to 20, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, with the theme: “From Commitment to Results: Delivering Quality and Equitable Healthcare for All Nigerians.”
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, represented at the inaugural meeting by the Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr. John Ovuoraye, described the National Council on Health as a critical platform for coordination, policy dialogue and decision-making in Nigeria’s health sector.
She explained that the Technical Committee and its various Sub-Committees serve as the foundation for developing sound, evidence-based and implementable recommendations for consideration by the Council.
The Permanent Secretary commended members for accepting the responsibility and making themselves available to contribute to the success of the 67th NCH. She noted that their participation demonstrates a shared commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s health system and improving the health and well-being of Nigerians.
She urged members to approach their assignments with open minds and a strong commitment to achieving results, while encouraging constructive collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nasarawa State Local Organising Committee.
“The quality of the work produced by these Sub-Committees will have a direct bearing on the effectiveness of the recommendations that will be presented to the National Council on Health,” she stated.
Also speaking, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Shekwonugaza Gwamna, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Hassan, welcomed participants to the inaugural meeting and reaffirmed the state’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for a successful 67th NCH.
He said the meeting provided an opportunity for the State Local Organising Committee to present the progress made so far, receive guidance from the Federal Ministry and strengthen preparations for the conference.
The Commissioner expressed appreciation to all members for their commitment and wished them fruitful and productive deliberations as preparations for the 67th Regular National Council on Health intensify.
The meeting also addressed key preparatory issues, including the formal inauguration of the Sub-Committees, clarification of the roles and responsibilities of Sub-Committee chairmen and members, review and finalisation of the 67th NCH logo, as well as guidance on the appropriate memorandum format and timely submission of memoranda by states.
Members of the Nasarawa State Local Organising Committee participated virtually, while officials and members from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare attended physically.
The 67th National Council on Health is expected to bring together key stakeholders from the Federal and State health sectors to deliberate on critical health priorities and develop actionable recommendations aimed at improving the quality, equity and responsiveness of healthcare delivery across Nigeria.
