Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda Targets Poverty Through Sustainable Empowerment — Doro
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing poverty and improving the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians through sustainable empowerment programmes and an inclusive social protection system.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard M. Doro, gave the assurance on Saturday during the commemoration of the 2026 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in Abuja.
The event, held at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, had as its theme, “United for Peace and Human Rights: Safe Homes for All.”
Doro said the government was adopting a multidimensional approach to poverty reduction under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with particular emphasis on protecting vulnerable citizens and creating opportunities for long-term economic independence.
He explained that the ministry’s One Humanitarian One Poverty Reduction Strategy (OHOPRS) was designed to bring humanitarian interventions, social protection, poverty reduction, economic inclusion and graduation programmes under one national framework.
According to the minister, the strategy seeks to move government interventions beyond immediate relief towards sustainable solutions that enable households to recover from economic difficulties and become self-reliant.
“Our task in the ministry is twofold: to protect Nigerians who are vulnerable today; and to open pathways that make them resilient and economically independent tomorrow,” Doro said.
He explained that palliative support remained important during emergencies and periods of hardship but stressed that sustainable economic opportunities were necessary to prevent families from becoming perpetually dependent on such assistance.
“While palliative ensures that a family survives a crisis, pathways ensure that a family doesn’t need palliative again,” he said.
The minister identified the Household Prosperity and Economic Social Protection Project (HOPE-SP) as one of the initiatives supporting the government’s shift towards sustainable recovery, empowerment and self-reliance.
He said the project reflected the ministry’s determination to strengthen social protection mechanisms and improve the economic resilience of vulnerable households.
Doro also called on Nigerians and relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 1 on ending poverty and Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities.
He noted that with only four years remaining before the 2030 SDGs deadline, the country needed to evaluate its progress and strengthen interventions aimed at addressing poverty and housing challenges.
The minister maintained that poverty reduction was essential to achieving peace and stability, urging Nigerians to work together to protect vulnerable people and create an environment where everyone could live with dignity.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Olubunmi Olusanya, commended the government’s commitment to poverty reduction and called for stronger partnerships between the government, development organisations, the private sector and other stakeholders.
Olusanya said the eradication of poverty required collective responsibility, adding that the government could not achieve the objective without the active participation of other relevant actors.
He expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their contributions and encouraged them to sustain their support for programmes aimed at improving the living conditions of vulnerable Nigerians.
Representatives of the European Union, African AIDS International, the World Food Programme, the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Fidelity Bank Plc, among other stakeholders, delivered goodwill messages at the event.
They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting poverty reduction initiatives and promoting a peaceful and secure society.
The commemoration ended with the presentation of palliatives to selected vulnerable persons, highlighting the ministry’s continued focus on providing support to Nigerians facing hardship.
