Police Foil Terror Bomb Attack at Bank in U.S., Arrest Suspect
French security operatives have intercepted what authorities describe as a planned terrorist attack targeting a United States financial institution in the heart of Paris, arresting a suspect moments before an explosive device could be detonated.
The dramatic early morning operation unfolded around 3:30am on Saturday in the upscale 8th arrondissement, just a short distance from the iconic Champs-Élysées, an area known for its luxury shops and heavy tourist presence.
Sources familiar with the investigation, police swooped in on the suspect immediately after he positioned a homemade device outside a branch of Bank of America, according to AFP.
The device reportedly contained approximately five litres of liquid believed to be fuel, along with an ignition mechanism.
French police said the explosive component included roughly 650 grams of powder, raising fears that the blast could have caused significant destruction in the densely populated district.
France’s counter-terrorism prosecutor’s office confirmed it had taken control of the case, opening an investigation into “attempted damage by fire or other dangerous means in connection with a terrorist undertaking” as well as a “terrorist criminal conspiracy.”
“The suspect was apprehended in the act and is currently in custody,” the office said, adding that multiple agencies had been mobilised in response to the threat.
Investigators from the Paris judicial police are working alongside the country’s domestic intelligence agency, the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI), to determine the motive behind the attempted attack and whether it is linked to broader extremist networks.
Security sources disclosed that while one suspect has been detained, a second individual believed to have been at the scene managed to escape and is currently being sought by authorities, raising concerns about a possible wider plot.
The device has since been neutralised and transferred to forensic specialists at the Paris police laboratory for detailed analysis.
French Interior Minister, Laurent Nunez, praised the swift intervention of law enforcement, saying the rapid response had averted what could have been a devastating incident.
“Well done to the rapid response team from the Paris police authority, whose actions thwarted a violent terrorist attack in Paris last night,” Nunez said, stressing that security forces remain on high alert.
“Vigilance remains at a higher level than ever,” he added, referencing heightened tensions across Europe amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts, particularly the war in the Middle East, which has triggered increased fears of retaliatory or ideologically motivated attacks on Western targets.
While the Paris police authority declined to provide further details, a spokesperson for Bank of America confirmed the institution is cooperating fully with French authorities.
“We are aware of the situation and are communicating with the authorities,” the spokesperson said.
The attempted attack underscores growing security concerns across Europe, where intelligence agencies have repeatedly warned of heightened risks tied to global conflicts and radicalisation.
As the investigation deepens, French authorities are expected to intensify surveillance and counter-terror operations, especially in high-profile urban centres like Paris, where symbolic targets and international institutions remain vulnerable.
