NDC Calls for CP Fatai’s Resignation, Alleges Partisanship Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate suspension and disciplinary action against the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, over his attendance at the inauguration of the executive members of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-affiliated City Boys Movement in Lagos.
The opposition party alleged that the commissioner’s presence at the political event compromised the neutrality of the Nigeria Police Force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
CP Fatai attended the inauguration of the Lagos State Executive Committee of the City Boys Movement on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Marcellina’s Place in Ikeja. He reportedly arrived in his official convoy alongside members of his entourage and was received by supporters at the venue.
The event, which focused on mobilizing grassroots support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, sparked public debate over the political neutrality expected of senior police officers.
In a statement shared on X, the NDC strongly condemned the commissioner’s appearance at the gathering, describing it as inappropriate for a serving police officer.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the upcoming general election,” the party stated.
The NDC argued that the incident raises serious concerns about the ability of the police to remain impartial during the electoral process.
According to the party, “We understand that the rudderless APC-led administration has no respect for our institutions, but seeing a Commissioner of Police at a partisan event can only point to one thing: he will be biased in the discharge of his duties during the elections.”
The opposition party therefore urged the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to immediately suspend and sanction CP Fatai over the incident.
Beyond the call for disciplinary action, the NDC also urged the police authorities to publicly reaffirm their neutrality ahead of the 2027 elections, protect supporters of opposition parties, and guarantee the safety of all eligible voters regardless of their political affiliation, religion, or ethnicity.
The party further demanded the immediate resignation of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, alleging that his actions had brought the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.
It also called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s successor, IGP Olatunji Disu, to intervene without delay.
“The Nigerian Police must explain to Nigerians what the Lagos State Commissioner of Police was doing at a partisan event. Enough is enough,” the party stated.
