Panic As Masquerader Snatches Imam’s Cap, Attacks Another Muslim With Cutlass

The Oyo State Chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned recent attacks on Muslims allegedly carried out by a masquerader identified as Lobanika, during a public procession at Osaro market in the Ojagbo area of Ogbomoso on Friday, July 25, 2025.
In a press release signed by the chapter’s secretary, Amb. Malam Ibrahim Agunbiade, MURIC claimed that “a masquerader named Lobanika, during his public outing on Friday, July 25, 2025, assaulted an Imam walking on the street by using a stick to snatch the cap on the Imam’s head.”
The statement further alleged that “the masquerade also stormed Oṣaro market on the same day and attacked another Muslim with a cutlass.”
MURIC described the incidents as “absurd, criminal, demeaning, nonsensical and completely unacceptable,” emphasising that the organisation remains committed to its motto of “Dialogue, Not Violence.”
The group expressed concern over the implications of such acts in a multi-religious society, urging traditional festival stakeholders to take immediate steps to prevent further confrontations.
“In a multicultural and religiously diverse state like ours, peaceful coexistence must be preserved. Therefore, we urgently call on all stakeholders of the Egungun Festival to take immediate and firm action by cautioning and controlling all those involved in masquerade outings,” the statement said.
MURIC also acknowledged reports of alleged reprisals by Muslims in Ogbomoso and called for restraint.
“Two wrongs do not make a right. We appeal to Muslims to exercise patience,” it said.
The organisation urged security agencies to monitor masquerade activities and ensure they do not become sources of violence or religious provocation. “These are the kind of actions that can escalate the crisis,” it warned.
MURIC raised particular concern over the Ololu Masquerade Festival scheduled to begin on Monday, July 28, in Ibadan.
“Based on multiple reports from concerned bodies, there is growing anxiety that this upcoming festivity might lead to further unrest,” it stated.
The group called on the Oyo State Government and security agencies to act decisively, saying, “The safety and rights of all citizens regardless of their religion must be guaranteed.”
In its closing appeal, the Islamic rights group urged Muslim communities across the state to remain calm as they await official intervention.
