Incident Overview
According to the Police, the deceased had received a parcel from a contact in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, which he intended to waybill to Sapele. The parcel was reportedly searched by members of the public and found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm ammunition.
He was subsequently apprehended by citizens, who handed him over to responding officers led by ASP Nuhu.
However, contrary to established rules of engagement, ASP Nuhu allegedly shot and killed the unarmed suspect while in custody.
Investigation Findings
A comprehensive investigation conducted by the Police Monitoring Unit found that the actions of ASP Nuhu and his team amounted to professional misconduct, abuse of office, and unlawful killing.
The Force emphasized that no allegation of criminal activity justifies extrajudicial action, stressing that all suspects are entitled to due process under the law.
Disciplinary Actions
ASP Nuhu and three other officers have been arrested and are currently in custody. Following internal disciplinary procedures, all officers found culpable have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, with the decision ratified by the Police Service Commission.
The case has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution.
Ongoing Investigation
The Police also confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals connected to the case, including the driver who delivered the parcel and two vigilante members who remain at large.
Police Commitment
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to accountability, justice, and respect for human rights, assuring the public that no officer found to have violated the law will be shielded.
The Force extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
