Tinubu Administration Commissions 100MVA Transformer, Expands Alausa Substation Capacity to 205MVA
The Federal Government has commissioned a new 100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at the Alausa Transmission Substation in Lagos State, in a major move aimed at strengthening electricity transmission and improving power supply across the Ikeja axis.
The Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, who commissioned the transformer on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, said the project would increase the substation’s total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA.
According to the Minister, the replacement of the existing 30MVA transformer with the new 100MVA unit has increased the quantum of bulk power available to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) by approximately 80MW for onward distribution to electricity consumers.
Tegbe described the project as more than an engineering milestone, noting that Alausa is located within one of Lagos State’s most economically and administratively important areas, with government institutions, businesses, industries, residential communities and other economic activities depending heavily on reliable electricity.
He said the additional 80MW capacity would benefit businesses, industries, hospitals, schools, offices, markets, technology companies, artisans and millions of residents whose livelihoods depend on electricity.
The Minister said the intervention formed part of the broader efforts of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address transmission bottlenecks and strengthen Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.
He explained that the Federal Government’s approach was to identify transmission constraints, invest in critical infrastructure, expand substations where necessary, and rehabilitate or replace ageing equipment threatening the reliability of the electricity network.
Tegbe commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for executing the capacity upgrade, as well as the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) for its role in ensuring the coordinated and efficient operation of the electricity system.
He also acknowledged IKEDC’s responsibility to translate the additional bulk power available from the strengthened transmission node into improved electricity service for consumers.
The Minister further commended Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited for executing the project and thanked all those who contributed to its completion.
Tegbe also praised the Lagos State Government, particularly Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for what he described as a constructive partnership and commitment to development.
He assured Nigerians that the Tinubu administration remained committed to transforming the electricity sector and would continue investing in critical infrastructure across the electricity value chain.
The newly commissioned 1x100MVA, 132/33kV transformer is expected to strengthen power transmission around Alausa and provide additional capacity for electricity distribution to consumers within IKEDC’s franchise area.
The commissioning was attended by officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, TCN, NISO, IKEDC, Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited, development partners and other stakeholders in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
