BREAKING: Traders Arrested, Shops Sealed Over Alleged Expiry Date Manipulation In Kano Market

Some traders have been arrested, while their shops were sealed, following an alleged attempt to change the expiry dates of expired milk products at Singer Market in Kano State.
The arrest was carried out by the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) in collaboration with the market leadership.

According to a statement issued by the council’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Jamilu Mustapha Yakasai, the intervention followed an emergency call by the Deputy Chairman of the Traders’ Association, Aminu Umar Dogara, who alerted the authorities to the suspected fraudulent activity.
The council’s Director of Monitoring of Traders and Products, Auwalu A. Muhammad, said the information prompted an immediate deployment of officials to the market to establish the facts.
He explained that the operation resulted in the arrest of the suspected traders and the sealing of shops connected to the alleged offence.
Muhammad condemned the practice, warning that the council would not allow traders to endanger public health by selling expired products or manipulating product information to deceive unsuspecting consumers.
The Executive Secretary of the council, Dr Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, reiterated that the protection of consumers’ rights remained a priority, stressing that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He further praised the market association leaders for their cooperation in tackling the circulation of fake, adulterated and substandard goods.
The executive secretary also expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Kano State Government for providing the necessary support and ensuring that the council operates without interference.
