COAS Announces Early Take-Off of 83 Army Division in Edo, Cites Nationwide Expansion
The Nigerian Army has announced plans to commence full operations at its newly established 83 Division in Benin City, Edo State, as part of efforts to strengthen its nationwide security operations.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, disclosed this on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a courtesy visit to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, at the Government House in Benin City.

Shaibu said the operationalisation of the division was part of the military’s strategic expansion from eight to 12 divisions, aimed at improving its capacity to tackle evolving security challenges.
He noted that the additional formations would strengthen the Army’s presence across the country, enhance operational coordination and improve its ability to respond swiftly to security threats.
The COAS particularly highlighted the importance of the new division to security operations in Edo State and other parts of the South-South geopolitical zone.
He further explained that the visit provided an opportunity to evaluate activities at Headquarters 4 Brigade and oversee the commissioning of important military projects.
These include the Affordable Home Ownership Option for Soldiers (AHOOAS) and Civil-Military Cooperation projects intended to enhance personnel welfare and promote stronger partnerships between the Nigerian Army and civilian communities.
Governor Okpebholo, while receiving the Army Chief, commended the military for its dedication, professionalism and sacrifices towards maintaining peace and security in the state.
The governor pledged his administration’s continued cooperation and support for the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in addressing security challenges.
The planned take-off of 83 Division marks another step in the Nigerian Army’s restructuring and expansion programme, with the aim of strengthening national security and improving operational effectiveness.
