The Nigerian Air Force has announced the recovery of the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) from the ATR-42 aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, describing it as a significant development in the ongoing recovery and investigation efforts.
The NAF said technical teams from the Air Force and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that the recovered Cockpit Voice Recorder was intact.
It added that part of the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder (FDR), commonly known as the black box, had also been retrieved, while the search for the remaining portion was still ongoing.
According to the Air Force, recovery teams have also retrieved more aircraft wreckage, engine components and human remains from the crash location.
The operation is being carried out in challenging swamp terrain, requiring careful coordination as teams work to recover outstanding aircraft components for further technical examination.
The NAF further explained that the Directorate of Identification and Classification (DIC) was handling the necessary procedures to ensure the proper identification of recovered human remains.
It said the families of the victims were being engaged throughout the process, while relevant authorities were also addressing environmental concerns raised by the host community.
The Air Force appealed for patience from members of the public, stressing that the recovery and investigation require time and professional handling to ensure credible findings.
It emphasised that the objective of the investigation goes beyond determining the circumstances of the accident, as the findings would also provide important lessons for improving aviation safety, strengthening operational effectiveness and safeguarding lives.
